Resolution for 2017 - Better Sleep!

Resolution for 2017 - Better Sleep!

With the prospect of a new year, a new beginning, we often set many goals in search of a better self. A healthy attitude, healthy body, healthy relationships, healthy career - these are some of the most popular and noblest of goals. There is one common link in all these objectives and it's often disregarded, if even considered at all. That common link is better sleep!

There is no doubt that healthy sleeping habits add much to the health of our mind, body, relationships and careers. Here are some simple ways to get a better sleep and in turn a better hold of your resolutions.

1. Make your bedroom an oasis for sleep.

"We’re not suggesting you try everyone’s porridge but when it comes to finding your bed, make sure it’s just right. One in five poor sleepers put their poor sleep down to an uncomfortable bed. There’s no single formula to get it right: it’s down to the individual! So test out different mattresses, different pillow fillings and different bedding until you find what’s right for you! On average, we spend a third of our day in bed so we may as well be comfortable!" - Sleepioblog.com

2. Make your bedroom a technology free zone.

"The studies on this issue continue to surface on a consistent basis. The more TV people watch before bedtime, the less sleep they get. In this case, studies confirm what we already know to be true: the lure of the screen is just too strong for many to turn off. Additionally, artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed makes it more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep." - Joshua Becker, BecomingMinimalist.com

3. Practice breathing.

The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise,” also called “The Relaxing Breath,” which promotes better sleep. This is based on pranayama, an ancient Indian practice that means “regulation of breath.” The exercise is described by Weil as “a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system” that eases the body into a state of calmness and relaxation." - MedicalDaily.com

4. Take your sleep seriously.

"Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health and safety. When we don't get adequate sleep, we accumulate a sleep debt that can be difficult to "pay back" if it becomes too big. The  resulting sleep deprivation has been linked to health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure, negative mood and behavior, decreased productivity, and safety issues in the home, on the job, and on the road." - SleepFoundation.org
